I also thought barrage was bad after use it for a while, but later I found with splinter weapon, just 2X barrage can wipe out 5-8 mobs. Incendiary arrows' biggest problem is long CD, can't spike the enemy good enough.

How about a build using Ranger only skills?

I am basically looking for something where I can rapidly change out my secondary and do skill hunter.

I would probably run some version of the 3 Necro; 2 Rit; 2 Mesmer 7 Hero team to go along on the skill capping runs.

I'm in the band of people who dislike barrage, sure it can kill big mobs that stick together, but what about those that scatter by default?.

I went to some areas in HM and decided to flag my heroes just a bit behind me and let me "destroy" the mob with barrage and splinter weapon from a hero. I got ONE good hit. Then two of their warriors came at us, their monk fled and the necro, mes and ranger stayed there. I could have either:

A.- Kill the group that stayed as a group.
B.- Gone after the monk.

So I went after the monk. with barrage. I could not kill him at all, which is obvious it's not exactly meant to spike a single target.
Tried the same experiment again, same thing happened except I went for the little ball of fools who would stand against my mighty barrage. I did get to kill them (at least most of them) but it took me a good minute.

This just brought back memories of good times when Asuran Scan ( oh yeah it's QQ time) could buff my damage.
I used to use Prepared shot, sunder+penetrating shot, with some other skills, so my first hit did up to 204 damage WITH deep wound in HM, hell, even needling shot did 90 damage each time. Needless to say the fleeing monk, died in two seconds in HM (maybe 2.5 seconds) sure i had to wait for a recharge time on my skills, but I knew that the biggest problem in their group was no more.

Anyways, If barrage CAN hit up to 6 targets, why not make it shoot six arrows to one target, that would, IMO truly make the skill Elite. Or just let it work with preparations. What's the point if having them if you can't use them anyways?

Paragon skills offer party support, adrenaline can be easily gained with Spear of Fury and a shield set is always helpful. You will make better use of skills than a hero paragon and if you run a lot of casters, being up front with your pet will help them out.

It's not my cup of tea but I can see some usage. I definitely agree that Marksmanship > Spear Mastery.

Beastmaster? There's little from other professions that will help your pet (and isn't better used by another team member)

Or, well, just bring 8 cap sigs.

Sometimes I ranger rit splinter and almost always brings EBSOH for me and spirits. I like needling shot and Im the strongest. Points spread between Channeling, Marks and Expertise. I gave up on degen builds. MM with death nova covers poisoning. My mesmer interrups. Curse nec with MOP etc. SOS hero. I basically concentrate on fast damage and setting up/spacing me, the spirits, and the heros.

Pets mixed in with w/e.

Ranger para support builds are ok.

Ranger nec vampire build with a bip lol. Get proted run in and start trouble.

Ranger sin SF... ball em up and nuke.

AP or SOS w vamp and other pve skills work well with RoJ heros etc.

If you build a decent team, you can play with whatever skills you want to. Might try ranger war tank or ursan later. Just me and some rojers blowing stuff up.

Ward Spell. You plant an Ebon Battle Standard of Honor at your current location. For 14...20 seconds, non-spirit allies in this area strike for +8...15 damage and an additional +7...10 vs. Charr.
Oh how I wish...

Works even better for minions though, bone fiends in particular.

Mess around with Marksmans' Wager and Asuran Scan. The energy upkeep from this is great. I'll post my build I've been toying with when I get home later today.

I run the following:

Incendiary Arrows
D-Shot
Savage Shot
Triple Shot
Read the Wind
"Save Yourselves!"
For Great Justice
Sunspear Rebirth Sig

Coupled with an orders hero and 2 paragons + a rit with Splinter. You pump out craploads of damage and (with a high enough faction rank) keep SY! up permanently.

I run a pet build. I've almost tried every build out there for a ranger (PvE-wise), and this one is fairly fun imo. I used to run just a pure pet build (4 attacks) but I felt that 4 is too much. Decided to take 1 out and replace it with a bow/spear attack instead. Also used to run with Great Dwarf Armor but replaced it with Call of Protection instead.

12+1+1 BM
9 Exp
9 Marks

E-Lunge
Scavenger's Pounce
Brutal Strike
Keen Arrow [ Can change this to whatever you want ]
Otyugh's Cry
Never Rampage Alone
Call of Protection
Comfort Animal

I use a Shortbow, sometimes I switch it to Spear and change it to 9 Spear Mast instead and replace Keen Arrow with something else. You could add a marksmanship rune if you want, up to you. Also have Strength of Honor Enchant on my Monk which I maintain on my pet.

Vanquished a couple of areas already with this build and a couple of HM Missions. I've thought of this long ago but Dagger/Scythe-Spam was still viable back then with A-Scan

Not really looking for feedback, but it's appreciated.

I've been using pet builds or just messing around with 4 interrupts (punishing shot, dshot, savage shot, disrupting shot) + a preparation. I used Quick Shot too but that was just for shits and giggles.

R/A is fun if you go with a pet but I find rangers aren't that fun either.

(jagged strike, wild strike, death blossom, throw dirt, <pet attack>, <pet attack>, <filler>, charm animal)

I found an interesting build that I haven't tried in HM yet, but its been working for me in NM.
Screaming Shot
Poison Tip Signet
Burning Arrow
Zojun's Shot (Point Blank Shot)
Rapid Fire
"I am the Strongest"
Ebon Battle Standard of Honor
and... a rez sig :P basically a filler skill

8+1 wilderness
12+2+1 marks
10+2 exp.

and I run a shortbow for faster swing speed.

Great thread, interesting to see how people are working things. Loving the idea of a non-bow ranger. I was running the Wounding Strike/Pet build, but have switched to Dagger/Pet now. I'll certainly be giving the Spear Ranger a go as that sounds like fun.

I think the main thing is to get a few good builds together that you like and just randomly pick one whenever you go somewhere. At least this way things will be a little different every time.

I have to agree with lamenting the loss of Asuran Scan. Also I am hopefull that they'll readjust some of the Ranger Elites to make them good again, as we don't have much choice right now inside our own profession.

For wik content I have been using a dagger/pet setup with death blossom spam. With a near permanent 33% ias it kills faster than when I run with a bow setup. Unfortunately, thats not something I am happy about...

ive ran incendury arrows, barbed arrows (prep) comfort animal, interupts, winnowing (was running 8 pets + minions) + spirit sumon pve skill

has nice synergy with discord as your supplying a bunch of conditions to multiple foes. downside is low yellow numbers, plus wanting heavy investment in 3 atributes

you can buff arrow damage with sprits like favourable winds and winnowing would buff all physical.. (so +10 to arrows overall)

physical buffs means you want as many hits as possible, so to compete with melee you need barrage, tripple shot etc :/

It annoys me that some of the best ranger builds are rangers without bows >.< Doesn't seem to follow the "spirit" of the profession...but that's a minor point. (rangers are due a massive buff tho...along the lines of the pet buff..but y'know...actually including bow attacks this time >.>)

Here are some of my favourite ranger builds to run in PvE (I tend to switch em up because otherwise the spamming gets D-U-L-L) (this isn't actually a team build btw...just an easy way of putting them all together :P before I get flammed for an "unbalanced" set up blah blah blah)

Template codes:
ExDex - [OgATcZ8kZ6ukXLMcmEV6yA1AjDA]
Enraged Volley - [OgATY3LmXCMU14xQWqC0Lk2AAA]
Incendary Arrows - [OgATcXsmVi1Q1gxAG81o4IXEAA] (I find needs a zealous bow to work...)

And now a series of prep shot variations, pretty basic, just use prep shot to power those more expensive attacks and pve skills (and I just get heros to bring along the winnowing/fav winds/weapon spell buffs to free up my bar):

Prep needle spammer - [OgATg1rmXK3qV6SU1gCE7w3QAA]
Prep shot 1 - [OgATYnLnZC2I3KXEG0xYmk2QAA]
Prep shot 2 - [OgETcVMmZ6SkCM3qVymU1IG03A]
Prep shot 3 - [OgETcVMmZ6SsCkCM3qVymMG03A] this is my current favourite variation. Before agro poison, then sloth hunters with long bow (so they're not moving/or using a skill), then as they ran towards you switch bows, get the prep up, YMLAD the melee (FUN) they're probably half health by now so get on the needle, prep shot on recharge for energy. Simples. and very fun.

But despite all that, I've found Enraged Sunspear [OgkjYxXYpS8gfGySPYzgBZ4G0G] to just kick ass...it really does. Which sucks because it's spear chukka and thus goes against my ethos of rangers should have bows but damn it it's just SO FUN >.<

/doh.
